| Polly | What's this? I don't know the answer myself. It's silverplate, marked EPNS ABSA DENMARK. The bulb at the end is heavy and a little dented, as if it's been knocked around a bit. Some sort of bar tool? A conductor's baton? |
| Scott Martin | Possibly a Hydrometer? For example to measure the alcohol content of beer, wine, gin, etc. |
| Polly | How would it work?
|
| jersey | Polly, I think it's a stirrer for drinks. Fill the bulb part with water & place in the freezer . When frozen, place it in the drink & stir....voila! an ice cube stir stick!Jersey |
| June Martin | Hi. Not clear how much the pencil has been sharpened down. What is the length of the piece? |
| jersey | Hello June, Are we talking about the same piece? This is not a pencil. The item Polly has shown is a stirrer & unless I miss my guess, it's aprox. 6 1/2".My apologies June, I completely missed the pencil as the measurement. | taloncrest | Try a Google search of the markings. It seems jersey has it right, although one Swedish site seems to call it a champagne beater, whatever that is. |
| Scott Martin | My understanding of Danish relies on the translation sites... But it seems to be a champagnevisp. Some say it is a Champagne Beater or swizzle stick. Others suggest it is a drink cooler. |
| Polly | Thanks, all. Yes, it's 6 1/2 inches long. Neither end unscrews, so I don't see how it could be filled with water. And I would hesitate to swing it around in a delicate glass--it's a heavy--but I guess you're right, it must be a swizzle stick. |
| doc | I wonder if it is to be used with a sugar cube in champagne, as in champagne cocktail (sugar cube and Angostura bitters). I thought it would also be a nice "muddler" for mint in a mojito! |
| Hose_dk | my danish is rather good give me a link and I translate. Skefabrikken Absalon(spoon factory Absalon (name of manufacturer)) |

| Hose_dk | oh no - another modern usefull(useless) item. The word champagnevisp - cannot translate but the use is to remoove the bubbles in champagne. And I say why? so I searshed. And found that the girls in Paris had trouble with their stomac because of the bubbles in the champagne. Apperently they lived of and from champagne in the public houses in Paris - ie the public women. Their clothes they used a corset - their stommac was pushed into a very slim model - the bobbles where not wanted (their effect)I also found a place saying that a champagnevisp can in seconds destroy what has taken a long time to manufacture in the champagne industry. You have a "wonderfull" useless item of electroplate - may the designer go to... The item excist in 3 variants - of my how whise one can be.. http://www.esaias.no/default.pl?showProduct=422&pageId=182

| Polly | I love it! A device specially made to get rid of champagne bubbles! I guess I won't be using it for its intended purpose very often. Thanks, Hose_dk! |
| Hose_dk | Today i visited a danish internet auktion site. Forum rules prohibit linking but never mind. The house has 8 for auktion in one lot. Described as drinks coolers. I think that they know their business. So cooler must be the use. |
| Polly | What would you do with it? Freeze it and then use it to stir the drink, so you wouldn't get melted ice diluting the drink? |
| Hose_dk | yes that must be it. When the metal is feezing you authomatically get a cold drink. That use was also made in one of the first replies. |
