The earliest pieces of arthropod-decorated silver in my collection are 2 coin silver pieces dating from the 1860s. They feature creatures mounted to rather boring flatware patterns. One is a Gorham coin silver teaspoon. The silhouette of the handle mimics that of Gorham's 1864 Medallion pattern. However, there is no die-struck decoration on this example; rather, there is a cast, three-dimensional spider mounted near the top of the handle. The spoon is stamped only with Gorham's tripartite trademark.
