Please start by clicking this link:
<*> <*> <*> <*> <*> <*> <*> <*> <*> <*> <*> <*> <*> <*>

The basics:

  1. Store your photos on an Internet server which permits third party linking.
  2. In your Silver Salon Forum post use the server URL address for the photo with the Silver Salon Forum img tags.
Like this:

Thats it! Thats the basics.

The only thing we request/recommended is that the maximum image width should not exceed 490 pixels at 72 dpi. Also you might want to use some of the forum’s other code tags to enhance your posts. Click here to read more about the other UBB code tags. Note: HTML doesn’t work in the forums.

-------------------- ---------------------- ----------------------

As simple as the above is, depending on the internet server you use to store your photos, it can get complicated.

Most ISPs (Internet Service Providers, i.e., Earthlink, AOL, etc.) give you online storage with your online account. Typically you get about 10 megs for no additional charge. This online storage can be used for creating a personal web page. It can also be used for storing and sharing photos. If you check with your ISP, you will most likely find out that you have been paying for but not using the ability to post photos on the Internet. If your ISP allows third party linking and if you can create a web page or an online photo album then you can usually add photos to your Silver Salon Forums posts.

Your ISP may provide you with a free software program or an easy browser interface to move your photos from your PC to their server.

On the Internet there are also web sites (some free) for posting photos. Many of these sites use technology to prevent a third party like the Silver Salon Forums from displaying your photos. Why won’t they allow a third party to link to your photos? There are a variety of reasons, this is really a big subject. Too big to discuss here but here are a few reasons:

  1. Many are secretly collecting and tracking your and those who visit your photos Internet habits and personal info.
  2. They make money selling advertising and can’t do that when you only link to your photos and not to their web page.
  3. They can’t secretly install their spyware on your visitors PC’s when your visitors get to see your photos without visiting their web page.
Occasionally an ISP will not make online storage available to their users. In this case, I would suggest changing to an ISP who is offering what most other ISPs do offer. If your ISP is not something you control (like you use the computer at work or the library), then there are sites that will store your photos online and permit third party linking. Some are free or for a small monthly fee will give you the online storage for a whole lot of photos. For example: www.inkfrog.com or www.picturetrail.com or www.photobucket.com There are others, so look around. If you find a good one please let me know. As an example, about Inkfrog:

Inkfrog has a free plan that allows you to store 6 images. All you have to do is sign up. If you want to store more images, Inkfrog will store up to 400 images for $5 a month. Inkfrog makes it pretty easy so check it out at: www.inkfrog.com or www.picturetrail.com or www.photobucket.com.

These sites can and often do change their policies as it regards fees, advertising, data collection and third party linking. So remember, from time to time, to check their policy info page to make sure things haven’t changed.

As another example: Picturetrail (click here)

Picturetrail provides free and fee base memberships. The most expensive fee is $19.95 per year. The free membership should be good for most.

Please note: Any of these free/fee photo places can turn on technology to block the posting of photos on/to non-business partner sites (like the Silver Salon Forums). This is why Geocities is not recommended for use with the Silver Salon Forums.

We recommend that your photos not exceed width of 490 pixels at 72 dpi. We also suggest that you remove any unnecessary borders/white space.

Why?

  • The recommended image resolution of 72 dpi is the maximum dpi the majority (98.999%) of computer displays/monitors can display.
  • A maximum image width of 490 pixels generally keeps the overall post width to within a few pixels of 600 dpi. 600 dpi is the maximum width a significant number of internet users computers can display without having to scroll left and right.
  • Removing the unnecessary borders/white space makes the file size smaller and this allows the image to load faster. This will also speed up the loading of the forum page thereby improving a visitors experience.

I hope this helps.

I just became aware of an very easy site to use for photos, Photobucket. For now, it is a free service. They do request that you make a donation so that it remains free. Photobucket www.photobucket.com

I registered and uploaded an image in less than 3 minutes. They give you the url so it will be very easy to put your photos into a SSF post.

Here is the photo I used for my test:

People often want to use the MSN share photo thing with thier family & friends and then with third party sites like the Silver Salon Forums

I beleive the MSN share photo thing is intentionally designed to prevent users from using the photos on third party sites (like eBay or SSF).

I did find this info which tells you how to give an ID/password to friends and family so they can log into your online MSN share photo thing album (click here).

Instead of the MSN share photo thing we suggest that you use Photobucket or one of the other online photo storage sites. Photobucket is a free service. They do request that you make a donation so that it remains free. Photobucket www.photobucket.com

I am not exactly sure about all of Yahoo but most people who use their "free" services usually have a problem.

Why not use photobucket?

Also I'll bet if you check with your ISP that you will find included with your account there is 5- 10
meg of online storage.

Some places have uploading software built in and some don't. Those with built-in uploading software tend to be fairly limited in how you can upload images. For more control on uploading to all kinds of website, you will want to have uploading software on your computer. This software is called FTP or File Transfer Protocol software. There are several makers of FTP programs, but the one I find the simplest is called CUTE FTP. You can get free shareware versions of various FTP programs from the usual places like tucows.com or shareware.com, but they tend to have timelimits or extreme functional limits on them. Ultimately, if you are going to be doing much on the web in terms of uploading photos and webpages and such you should just invest the $35 to $40 these things cost and buy one to load onto your computer.

I can also recommend

IrfanView

It is free, has a good selection of editing tools, handles virtually any image type, and is easy to use. Nice program.

Having had great difficulty with the posting of photos until utilizing photobucket I would like to add to be sure to easily reduce the size to the recc.pixels by editing "size" to the 25% choice, copying and then pasteing it to the message in your forum post.

In the last year there has been a major shift in the PCs/Operating Systems/browsers/screen resolutions that SSF members and visitors use.

Hardly anyone is still using WebTV. Most (not all) members and visitors are now using 600x800 resolution or higher. 83+% use Windows and 9+% use Mac. The big surprise is that Internet Explorer use is behind Mozilla as 56.5+% use Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox and 36.9+% Internet Explorer.

It is unclear how many use dial up but some spot checking reveals that some members and visitors still use dial up.

Because there are dial up members/visitors and since 99.9% of all displays will only display high resolution images at 72 pixels, we will keep the 72 dpi image Guideline request. This will ensure that the image downloads at the maximum line speed.

As it regards image width we are relaxing the maximum image width from 470 pixels at 72 dpi to 640 pixels at 72 dpi.

This is not a request for you to post larger images. We still feel the original image size of 490 pixels at 72 dpi is more than adequate in the majority of posts. The hope is that the new maximum size will make it easier for people who have cameras that automatically produce images of 640 pixels wide at 72 dpi. If you are able to resize your images without it affecting the quality of your post please do. Resizing to 490 pixel width will make your post more readable for the majority of members and visitors.
