Here's a tricky one:

Do any of you have recommendations for lighting silver in cases? I'm a member of club that needs to rethink its trophy cases. We have glass shelves. In one case, someone installed small fluorescent tubes running vertically inside the front face at the corners. That was OK, but a little hard and the light color wasn't great. In another case we had some sort of special fixtures (not sure what - specified by an exhibition designer at the time) that ran just under the front face of the shelves, concealed by a little wooden fascia or valance. That was OK, but created problematic reflections, so we ended up covering the glass shelves with mylar.

I know there are all sorts of LED strips available now that would be easy to install, but I wonder about reflections of little dots of light.

Any suggestions? Would also appreciate any thoughts about cases and shelving. They need to be pretty big, given the size, number, and weight of some of the pieces.

It will be hard to be specific without seeing the cases, measurements, contents, the room lighting and/or the locations of windows ....etc.

Lighting color is measured in kelvin. This chart may help:

Diffusion lenses will also have a bearing on the results.

Hi Scott--
That's a very useful graphic. I'm familiar with color temp, and would add to this (for anyone who wants to get deep into the weeds on this) that CRI --color rendition index -- is another number to look for; the higher the better. It's possible now to find LEDs in the 90s.

It occurs to me that this is maybe a retailer's problem -- because they're in the position of making things look their best. Perhaps someone can pass on their experience with different techniques and sources.

An Internet search for museum showcase lighting brings up some ieads that may be useful.
Your local museum might share their ideas and suppliers with you. I suspect there are more choices now than ever because of LED lighting.
