[26-2638]

I just wanted to introduce myself and say hello to everyone. I'm a novice silver collector. We've had a set of Towle King Richard seemingly forever and very recently have started expanding our collection into other silver items.

I'm curious to know what online venues other than Ebay other members watch for purchases.

Again, hello everyone. I hope to learn a lot give everything here.

Welcome to the forum.
If you are referring to a place to see what approximately things are selling for, Heritage Auctions is a good resource. (you have to register though)

I have also found that antiques shows (not flea markets) around the country can have some nice silver, though the prices tend to be full retail.

Kimo's advice of going to antique shows is what I would recommend.
That gives you a chance to talk with the dealers about silver and to pick up and examine silver first hand. Holding silver and examining it in person is much different than looking at pictures.
After you have seen silver from different time periods you may decide to concentrate on only certains eras. Then I would look for some books that cover that time period and read for awhile.

Yes, antiques shows are a great place to go and see silver that you can actually examine silver closely and that includes handling it to get tactile information as well and visual. The more you personally examine and hold old silver the better you will be at determining for yourself what is what. It also helps you build your skills at detecting forgeries - either forged in entirety silver, or the more dangerous and difficult to detect forged hallmarks on old silver. This is especially important if you are collecting silver that was made by big name makers that carry big premiums for the name. Once you get really good, the markings are the last thing you examine when looking at a piece of old silver. The pattern, workmanship, patina, size, weight and heft, and overall impression should tell you the maker and approximate date in most cases and the hallmarks are just confirmations.

Thank you all for the advice. I will register at heritage auction as well as look at local options. Looking forward to posting some things once I finally master submitting photos.

I personally have never bought anything at the Heritage on line auctions because of the fees they charge. They add a 25 percent "Buyer's Premium" on any silver that you win in one of their auctions, plus they also charge you a shipping fee that is above the actual cost to ship it. You wind up paying a great deal more than the amount that you bid. I suppose I one could simply reduce one's high bid by 25 percent or 30 percent before entering it to counter such high fees but then much of their material has secret reserves so it is not likely to enter such a modified bid at a market value and meet the frequent secret reserves. This is my personal opinion.
