We are constantly bombarded with bad news about people being shot by stray bullets. It makes you shake your head and wonder what happened to humanity. Truth be told, maybe things haven't changed all that much.

Found blurb in 9/20/22 issue of Jewelers' Circular about Scott T. Kirkpatrick, a jewelry salesman from Dayton, KY who suffered a scalp wound when he was struck by a stray bullet while automobile riding in Cincinnati. According to Kirkpatrick, "The bullet bore through his felt hat and made a wound across the top of his head. He told police he and a friend with whom he was riding heard an explosion and thought it was a tire, but when they alighted and found nothing the matter, they were climbing back into the machine when he felt blood trickling into his eyes. The wound is healing rapidly."

Jewelry salesmen were tough cookies.

Hi June, one could make the argument that we are safer and healthier than in any time in history. It's just that we get all the news and stories that years ago would only circulate to a small number. Also there are a few billion more people so the number of people injured/dying from calamity is larger but the % is smaller.

In the twenties I wonder what the accidental gun death rate was? Or how about death from horse riding/driving in the 1850's?
