Around the late 1890s to the 1910s, many pieces of jewelry were produced (mostly hatpins, brooches, and buckles) bearing the mark "Sterling front" or "Sterling top". They are usually in the Art Nouveau style and were probably meant to be less expensive knock-offs of the all-silver pieces by Unger, Kerr, etc. The silver is often relatively thin, the backs are just base metal, and although the designs are often less successful than their signed counterparts, there were still some neat pieces produced. Below are two unusual examples of "Sterling Front" jewelry. These date to about 1895-1900.
