Hi, I have what I believe is silver and turquoise necklace and matching bracelet. The set is very heavy and elaborate and both pieces are marked Mexico Taxco Hechoen. There is no makers mark or silver mark on either. My question is: Does all silver jewelry made in Taxco have to be marked sterling or stamped with its silver content or was there a time period when that wasn't required? Thank you. adkwmn

It should read: Hecho en Mexico (made in Mexico), in this case in the famous "silver" town Taxco. All sterling silver should be hallmarked, especially in Mexico!

Yes, there was a time period when hallmarking was not required (1500 and later), but that is long ago.

Maybe a jeweler can test it for you.

My impression is that silver marking is somewhat of a hit or miss proposition. Most is marked correctly. Some has partial or poorly applied marks. Some just doesn't get marked. If the piece is handmade, which a picture could tell us, we might come up with a reason for it not being marked. Sounds like a beautiful set.

That is an absoluely wonderful necklace and bracelet set. Truly great.

For what it's worth, I have been told that Mexican silver could be bought without a sterling mark. This was so a tourist could truthfully say they were not bringing 'anything of value' home with them. Just some inexpensive souvenirs. Without a sterling mark, the jewelry would be valued and dutied as costume jewelry. It's a story that I have heard from a few people, refering to events in the 30's and 40's.

Is there a hallmarking fee in Mexico? I've just returned from a quick trip to Egypt and some jewelers there were offering silver and gold items either with hallmarks or without depending on whether you wanted to pay the extra cost for the hallmarking fee to have the marks applied. They were saying that their profit margins were so thin that they picked up a bit more business from tourists who were glad to buy a bit cheaper by skipping the marks, but that no Egyptian would buy anything without paying the extra for the hallmarks because of tradition there.
