This nice hammered sterling torque is marked SC&LCo in an oval, presumably for Shreve Crump and Low, then in script Handwrought, then sterling, then in a signature-like stamp Conley. The gold tint is from the lighting; the piece is plain sterling.

I believe this may be James Conley of Newburyport, MA, identified online as a past designer for Cartier and Shreve Crump and Low. Does anyone know anything more about him, dating for this piece, etc.?

Hello,

Thanks for getting back to me. I bumped into your site and this post. It's been a while, but perhaps this person is still curious. I'd be glad to answer any questions. Here is the post- Conley torque for SC & L.

It is my collar and I did make sterling and mixed metals jewelry with stones for Cartier New York and SC&Low in Boston. I also made table top products (letter openers, boxes, baby spoons, silver goblets, communion plates, wine cups, a challis, etc; was part of a special exibit of well known silver sculptures from around the world at SC&Low and did restorations of significant pieces, for The MFA and private collections.

Thanks for your time,

Jim Conley

Hello Jim!

Wonderful info on your work . Is there any relationship to Conley & co ? Are you still doing your craft?

Nice to hear from you. All the best.

Great to see this post and to hear of Jim Conley. I have been forging neck collars for the past 30+ years and still forge at least 12/year. Most are for retail shops. I just finished one in 14k and have an order for three in sterling.
I also collect collars by others and have examples by Ronald Hayes Pearson, ONC, Richard Messina and Mexican jeweler Sigi Pineda.
It is always a treat to see the work of others and even better to understand the skill it took to make it.
