Just showing off my new Shiebler pin, with a maple leaf and maple seeds (in season right now). It doesn't have an insect, alas, which was why I was able to afford it.

Sweet pin Polly! What bug would it have had? Copper with silver legs and wings??

Well, this particular brooch didn't have a bug--I mean, it's complete this way, with no bug, and no sign that it ever had one, but nobody was buying it because everybody wants one with a bug, not one with no bug, so I got to buy it.

A computer search on relevant terms will turn up various Shiebler brooches with leaves, beetles, flies, and spiders currently or recently for sale for prices beyond my budget. The critters are generally plain cast silver, very occasionally with garnet eyes, or enameled wings, or some such.

A search of "Shiebler brooches with leaves, beetles" turns up one with a silver leaf beetle.
I must be missing something, but I am not sure what the attraction is to a leaf beetle that is about to eat my leaf. Maybe as a gardener I have a heightened fear of bugs that will eat my plants.

Ha--not the perfect gift for a gardener, then. Perhaps gardeners would prefer my bugless brooch.

Froggy! I could not resist this Shiebler frog-on-a-lilypad brooch, which seems closely related to my beloved Ludwig, Redlich leaf-motif Rusticana spoons. I bet Ludwig had a hand in its design.
