The bee became an emblem of Emperor Napoleon and as such was rarely used on silverware and much more commonly on fabrics and other materials. Can you please tell me how this insect came to be an imperial emblem--did it have anything to do with Napoleon's Egyptian campaign? I know there is a hieroglyph in the form of a bee but am unsure of other possible Egyptian connections.

I believe that Napolean selected the bee emblem as he greatly admired its industrious nature and was a good symbol for his new republic. I would think that the organization and teamwork associated with its hive were qualities he also noticed. Bees produce honey and wax.
I asked an Egyptologist what the bee glyph signified. It sometimes represents the king of lower Egypt.
There is a French book on symbolism that a friend of mine has in her library. Bees were considered to originate from the tears of the sun god Ra. Interesting as scarab beetles are more often associated with the ancient Egyptian culture.
I found a website on Freemasonry - bee symbolism (including beehives and honey) were significant in many ancient cultures including Greek and Hindu myths and rituals. Here is a site linking the occult and the bee - On the Symbolism of the Bee in the Occult Tradition

I have heard a few different explanations. Here is my take:

Bees have been inspiration and a powerful symbol for a long time. In the Holy Writ Bees are spoken of as a term of comparison for a numerous army relentlessly harassing their enemies. In the book of Judges, Samson ate the honey from a swarm of Bees in the dried carcase of a lion he killed. The Danites were represented by a serpent, an eagle, a lion, and bees. The powerful and wealthy Barberini family of Rome also adopted the Bee as a device. One Barberini family member, Pope Urban V111 (1623-44), had the buildings he commissioned ornamented with Bees. When the tomb of Childeric I, son of Merovee, a 6th century Frankish king, was opened in 1653, 300 miniature Bees of gold were found.

Napoleon took the Bee as his personal emblem as a link with/to the early rulers of France and because the Bees were symbolic of a Republic of equals under a single leader. I also believe that the Holy Writ's comparison of Bees for a numerous army relentlessly harassing their enemies may have been inspiration for Napoleon. When Napoleon was crowned he had the Bees from Childeric I's tomb sewn into his coronation robe. The populous celebrated the coronation by incorporating images of the Napoleon Bees into their fabrics.

The following image is of the Childeric I bees:

Very cute. Although the Napoleonic bee is always orientated straight up and not facing sinister. Clearly bugs are a good thing, especially bees.

Does any of the above help or are you hoping Ulysses will have something to say before you post additionally?
