I recently acquired this butter knife made by my friend Dewey Barich. Dewey coauthored a book on Art Metalwork and was an educator in Industrial Arts. I met Dewey a few years before his passing.

GREEN VALLEY, Ariz. – Funeral services were held for Dewey F. Barich, 89, of Green Valley, Ariz. Monday, Feb. 19, 2001 at St. Francis-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church, Green Valley. He was cremated and his ashes will be spread over The Philippines.

He died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001 at his home in Green Valley. He was born Feb. 19, 1911 in Chisholm to Eli and Jennie Barich and grew up in Kitzville. He was one of the first graduates of Hibbing Junior College. He married the former Verna Eddy on Dec. 29, 1934 in Hibbing. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, Stout, in Menominee, Wis.; a master’s degree from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and a doctorate from Wayne State University in Detroit. He taught industrial arts in the public schools in Flint and Trenton, Mich. He later taught at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant and Kent State University in Ohio. At Kent, he was chair of the industrial arts department and, after World War II, the coordinator of veterans’ affairs.

In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He served as the engineering officer for LCI(L) Flotilla 24, which saw combat during the liberation of The Philippines in 1944. He was discharged in 1945 with the rank of lieutenant commander. After the war, he took up silversmithing and became an accomplished silversmith. In 1951, he became manager of educational affairs for Ford Motor Co. In 1958, he was named president of the Detroit Institute of Technology. Over his 18 years as DIT’s president, he guided it from being a part of the YMCA to being a private college.

After retiring from DIT in 1976, He and his wife moved to Tucson where he remained active in safety and educational affairs. In 1995, they moved to Green Valley.

He was a member of Rotary International, The National Safety Council and Episcopal churches wherever he lived.

He is survived by his wife, Verna; a brother, Sam (Shirley) of San Antonio, Texas; four children: Judy Robinson of Tucson; Dewey Jay (Jaye) of Dover, Del.; Barbara Panian of Midland, Mich. and Wendy (Richard) deBear of Worthington, Ohio; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Sava and three brothers, Luka, Steve and Garrott.

Rememberances may be made to Sout University Foundation, P.O. Box 790, Menomonie, WI 54751-0790. Funds should be directed to the Dewey and Garrott Barich Scholarship.
