Recent find and puzzling. It is stamped Astor House with the number 26 (inventory #?)on the front. There is a G on the top of the back and the makers same of W S Wood 367 B(road)Way. Astor House was built in 1836 by John Jacob Astor as the first luxury hotel in the US.
The maker is possibly William Schenck Wood (ca. 1796-1850)which is all I could find under that name and only in Wev's genealogy page.
I'm relative certain this is coin, there is no wear and it polishes like coin, but I'm also surprised that an establishment like a hotel or restaurant would use real silver. Any thoughts on that?
The dates for Wood would work for the founding of Astor House as would the style of the spoon. I'm also wondering if anyone has any info on the early use of 'branded' silverware in establishments.

The Astor House was where many statesmen stayed, like Abraham Lincoln. So perhaps this is from the flatware they would use with presidents??

That is certainly a possibility Scott, presidents and other visiting dignitaries. I find a bit of humor tho on how this piece was (I assume) so visibly identified as to owner and inventoried, possibly to deter dignitaries from collecting souvenirs?

Great spoon that would have many stories to tell.
I have always thought that less theft would occur if they left the name of the hotel off, as it would then just be another spoon.

But then you couldn't say that you'd been there.
