Wev lists 7 Hortons, most from Mass. I have a feeling this may be a southern example, possibly H P Horton of Savannah GA. Comparing the font of my mark with one I found online (but with the initials H P in front) the fonts are the same. It's and attractive spoon, wish I had a set of them. Any thoughts?

While it is entirely possible you are right, I think it still needs to be treated as a 'possibly' with that many Horton's working in the same era. San serif face designs of that era were very similar and often hard, at the best of time, to differentiate.

That said, thanks for the prodding -- prompted by this, I just tracked down and added Humphrey P. Horton to the project. He was born 2 Feb 1823 in Glastonbury CT. He is recorded as a jeweler in the 1850 Hartford census. He must have moved south soon after, as he went into partnership with Cornelius H. Rikeman late that same year. The firm lasted until 1856. He is listed in the 1859 city directory at 133 Congress and was enumerated in the 1860 census as a jeweler 'of Hartford county CT.' He died 26 Apr 1865 from wounds received in the Civil War. It appears he fought for the southern cause, as he is listed in the Savannah City War Roll of Honor. I have two marks, one incised with pseudo-marks and one incuse.

Thanks Wev; I guess without seeing definitive marks for all of them the attribution will always be 'pending'.

Interesting spoon. Do you know the name, if any, given to this pattern? It is similar to the Jenny Lind or many oval patterns.

Looks like a variant of the Olive pattern to me.
