Shown above is silver marked Cook and Simpson with the number 1855 and another piece marked Schoolfield with the number 1855. They are both on typical Missouri soup ladles. I used to think that 1855 referred to the year by that number. However the partnership of Cook and Simpson was not formed until 1866 so the number 1855 probably does not stand for a year.

Cook and Simpson had their place of business in Boonville, Mo while Schoolfield was in Columbia, Mo some 25 miles to the east, but he had moved to St. Louis by 1860.

The number 1855 may be a manufacturer’s number or a style number and for it to appear on silver sold by two different silversmiths years apart may indicate that is was made by a third party.

The ladle shown recently sold at auction and it is the first time I have seen 1855 on silver that was not marked Schoolfield. Has anyone else seen the 1855 mark on silver?
