Here are the 435 silversmith in my project who were of age in 1776, though some had not begun to work at their craft and others had set it aside. Some among them were Loyalists, but many served against the king, some prominently and others as common soldiers. A few made the ultimate sacrifice, like Lieutenant Enoch Stanton, who perished in the defense of Fort Griswold at Groton, Sept. 6, 1781, the same day and in the same battle as his brother Daniel. It is recorded in the minutes to Washington that, "He asked for no quarter and no quarter was given. He fought like a tiger and was shot to pieces."

I have recently come across history of my family that took place a year or two before 1776. It gave account of a dinner in the Francis and Sarah (Burt) Shaw house next door to Paul Reveres house and across the street from Sarah's fathers house, John Burt.

Their eldest son Samuel, 19, named after his Burt uncle called out one of the 2 English officers billeted at their house for insulting the colonials as stupid and lazy.

The duel was called off by the commanding officer Pitcairn, who made the other apologize. In my mind that enforced apology is the reason I am here today!

Since John Burt died in 1745 and Samuel Burt in 1754 it was Benjamin Burt, listed above by Wev who might have been on the scene. He possibly fought at Lexington as there is a record of a Benjamin Burt there.

Belated happy 4th to all and huge thanks to Wev for his time and efforts to record all the smiths!

Wait, Rob, if you're related to silversmiths on WEV's list and are yourself a silversmith, why aren't YOU on WEV's list?

Ahwt, it really is and my immediate family had no idea. An academic from the mid west wrote about a 19th c. relation and related the story to give back ground. I stumbled on her book because a cousin was selling family China and the auction house quoted her.

By the way Wev I know the currently living Timothy Bonticou (he is not a silversmith but is descended directly).
