Blest Be He Who Gives Me Books

Blest be he who give me books---
Friends of winter’s inglenooks,
Weaving garlands scent with May,
When without the skies are gray.

He who gives me gold is friend,
But his gilded gift I spend,
Gifts of wine, though fraught with mirth,
Must be drunk to find their worth.

But when wine no more inflames,
And when want the lucre claims,
One gift, one friend, remain the best---
He who gives me books is blest.

Douglas Malloch

(To include silver references of course).

Thanks for sharing, bascall! I was an early and voracious reader, and remain addicted to books, along with my Mom and both brothers (we often share and give books as gifts). Always gratifying to find someone's verse or prose that expresses my feelings or thoughts.
