[26-0784]

I am going thru some things I cleaned out of a house after the owner passed on.

There are 2 items I need identified, so that I can determine what to do with them.

One of them is this platter:

which has this mark on the back:

The other is this gravy boat, which has no marks on it at all. The gravy boat has the rim and handle made from some other kind of metal, but I'm not sure what. Pics are here:

I'm hoping someone else here can give me more info on this piece.

Thanks for all your assistance!!!

Where did my post go?? If I did something wrong here, please let me know...I read the guidelines, and I was pretty sure my second post followed them to the letter. So why is my post gone??

Sorry for the post problems -- looks like there was a little hick-up in the indexing. And thank you for re-sizing your images (which was the original issue).

As to your original question, do not be surprised if you receive little or no help. The purpose of the forums is not to assist folks in deciding if something is worth selling, which appears to be the point of your post. Giving you the benefit of the doubt, we will leave it open for now.

I'm not interested in selling the items, I'm just wanting to know if I should put them on the shelf as collectible items, or use them as everyday items. The gravy boat would look great on the Thanksgiving table, but if its an unusual or hard to find object, then it doesnt need to be used. I'm so glad that I got the posting problem worked out. Thanks for the quick response, and the benefit of the doubt.

Both appear to be silverplate, and of no great rarity. Use them with pleasure! But don't cut on the platter, as steel will scratch through the plating pretty quickly....

Welcome to the forum. EPNS stands for "electroplated nickel silver." Nickel silver is an alloy of copper, nickel, zinc and tin (no real silver). A coating of silver is bonded to the base metal via electropalting, which is why FWG told you not to use the plate as a cutting surface. The word "Hallmark" is misleading as hallmarks apply to silver not plate. Addition of pseudo marks like this were used to help sell the piece. The number underneath is probably an order or stock number.

Yes, the piece is not rare but is will be a nice addition to your Thanksgiving table as a sauce or gravy boat, so enjoy it!

Or, as in this case, it's just the name of the company -- the Hunt-Hallmark Company of New York City, who produced large quantities of standard silverplate for department stores in the 50s and 60s.

I think the design of the gravy boat is cool looking. I would be proud to use it for gravy at Thanksgiving.

Is it possible that the reason the handle and rim look like a different metal because they have lost their silverplate over time? I have a pair of nice repousse salt and pepper shakers that are/were plate. They have lost most of their plate and look very similar to the handle of the gravy boat. Luckily because of the repousse they are still interesting and usable even so. I have thought of having them replated because they are old and interesting, but I suppose it isn't necessary.

I want to thank you all for helping me out with these pieces. I appreciate the information. The gravy boat will be on the table for Thanksgiving, and I'm thinking the tray will do just fine holding appetizers...like cheese and crackers...something that doesnt need cut up. Again, thakns so much for helping out the newbie, and by the way, Happy Thanksgiving to all-may we all be served our gravy out of a silver boat...
