Above are two silver plated items. The cup on the right is an unmarked Old Sheffield Plate tankard while the one on the left is an unmarked silver plated bowl. What seems unusual to me is that they both have false bottoms. The makers for both items choose to add an extra plate on the bottom that probably was unnecessary from any functional reason and made what should have been inexpensive items a little more expensive.

Maybe I am just used to seeing American coin items where the silversmiths seemed to pay little attention to finishing the unseen bottoms. Any ideas as to why these were constructed in this manner.
