Dear wev: [snip] made by Heinrich and/or Anna Eicher, as I was recently in the home they once shared & learned of Heinrich's earlier part in the Kalo group. Yr post of some time ago said your father remembered Heinrich's funeral in 26 or '27; do you know cause of death? Did the Depression make it impossible for Anna to continue to support the family with her work in silver, and is there record of pieces created from '27 to '31? Any more info on their possible origins in Denmark? Is Eicher a common name in Denmark, or were the family orig. German? I wd appreciate any info on them [snip] much thanks, jayne ------------------ [Please read the yellow box at the start of this page. I believe Eicher died suddenly of a heart attack, but that is just family lore. He was born in 1877 and came to the US from Denmark in 1907. His emigration form lists him as a silversmith. I do not know if any of his relatives still survive in Denmark. Anna had a niece living outside Copenhagen, but I have not heard from her in several years. Anna continue making silver until her death. As noted elsewhere, I have a nice pair of cuff links made for my father in 1930. IP: Logged |

THANK you so much. The cuff links are beautiful, and would have been made shortly before Anna's death, as the tragedy happened in 1931, near Clarksburg, not Clarksville, WV. I am from a nearby town, and my mother, as a six year old, remembered this tragedy. She was a collector of silver and pewter. Did Anna work in the large building behind 312 Cedar? She was apparently in financial straits and that was one reason the tragedy happened - this is one reason I wondered if she was still making silver. I was actually told that her husband had been a silversmith, and that Grant Wood once lived in their studio/barn, but that Asta was a painter. Is there any way to see photos of more of her work, esp work from '26 - '31? much thanks, jayne IP: Logged |

From my father's recollections, they worked out of the front room, but that may have been display, rather than studio proper. Anna did quite a bit of ceramic painting/glazing, but I believe that was more a hobby than business. Her niece had a number of pieces, all in the A & C style, rather like Newcomb IP: Logged |
