Checking to see if any forum members can recommend silversmiths for repair in the central to south Florida areas. I have shipped items to out of state smiths and have been very satisfied with their work. I have a few items that I would prefer to hand deliver for repair.

Have you tried Barron's in Winter Park? They've been here since the '50s - last thing I had done was maybe 20-25 years ago, mangled serving spoon that came out well...

I have used Barron's in the past. He has done good work for minor repairs, polishing and restoring patina to dipped repousse pieces. For more complicated Repairs or higher valued items, he has referred me to Herman's. I did appreciate that he understood his limitations and referred business. David is a tinker, not so much a silversmith. Certainely a big step up from many of the jewlers that offer to do repairs. Nice guy nonetheless.

I highly recommend Rob Butler, and I'm sure others on this board will agree:

He has a workshop in Miami.

He is an artist and a true silversmith, with very serious training and decades of experience.

Also a super nice guy.

Thanks Polly. I checked his website and he states that responses for repair consultations may be 6 months out. Sounds like he is busy...a good sign I suspect. Time seems to fly by quickley....so the wait is no real issue to me.

Vetdaddy, I have it on good authority that butlersilver's repair back log is not anywhere near 6 months. He has changed that on the web site. Also he'd enjoy meeting you either in Miami (at the antique show?) or up north near Lake Wales/Orlando where his step mom resides!
That goes for dragonflywink too I enjoy talking about old silver!
Err, uhm I mean agleopar - oh shoot, it would be fun to meet you both, this is Rob Butler... Cheers.

Well this is great news. Would definitely like to meet and chat. Sadly, it is increasingly difficult to find people interested in conversing about antique silver. I believe that silver being a precious metal is both a blessing and a curse. The blessing is self evident, the curse is reclusive silence as we do not talk about our "Investments."

I am sure we will give the Miami show a ĉhance....curious about the new venue. There is also a Palm Beach show the first week of December that we would like to get to, but as with most people, our calendar fills up quickly that time of year....so TBD!

Anyway, I will plan on contacting you when we decide on our next repair.

Many thanks for the personal response.

Likewise,

Cheers!

I certainly agree with Polly. Rob Butler is a wonderful silversmith. I have had several pieces repaired by him with much satisfaction!

@vetdaddy, your right about the "curse". Part of it is that silver is more a commodity metal and less of a precious metal. Meaning that it is perceived by the public being like gold/platinum but in reality it is just an expensive copper. I think most of its price is driven by the investment market and if it was just traded as a commodity it would be 1/2 its current price, let alone when it is driven up to $50/oz.

The sad thing is that the work in antique silver is so undervalued. When I am asked to make something with all the bells and whistles (rarely), if the time is honestly priced at what a plumber makes the cost is 20 times the cost of the silver.

I'd enjoy doing this in person, let me know if you are headed this way and I will like wise if I go north.

@nautilusjv, many thanks!!
