Let's try again.

My grandfather unearthed this piece in Italy during WWII around 1941-1944. It was discovered while digging a foxhole. It was since passed on to my father and now is in my possession. I would like to find out more information about it, would appreciate your assistance.

Thanks.

Monty,

Very interesting piece and story! To help you with identification, we need to know if there are hallmarks anywhere on the piece. These might be symbols, crests, letters, numbers or combinations of the above. They would probably be stamped inconspicously on the underside of the piece, and you will probably need a magnifying glass to find and identify them. Once you do, see if you can post a picture of the marks or at least describe them.

Good luck,
Tom

Here are a couple pics, one is a close up of one of the four base feet, showing a crown and cross. The other is the imprint on the bottom of one of the feet. The numbers at the top seem to be 8 and 0. A crown on the left, Broggi, and Milano. I hope this helps. Thanks for your assistance.

Broggi is a large Italian silverplate manufacturer (www.broggi.it) and those marks appear to be typical 20th-century European marks for silverplate. If this was unearthed during WWII it must have been quite freshly buried. Hard to tell from the photo, but it appears to have formed part of a decorative centerpiece.

Or from the Americans. Doesn't really matter who takes your stuff, it's still gone....

Or from other Italians. A breakdown of law and order often accompanies the last stage of a war. Family stories of "how the Yankees stole the silver" abound along the route of Sherman's march. Many are true, but in other cases lawless elements unconnected with either army were to blame.

I posted the information and pics to get assistance on identifying this piece. I understand the commentary on the possible scenarios in which this piece ended up where it did. If anyone knows a contact that is familiar with Broggi work, please let me know. I have sent an email to Broggi in Italy but I did not receive a response.

Thank you,

Monty Winters
