Since this is the clueist place in town....... let's play stump the pros.

This is a great piece of philagree and reminds me of the Middle East. There is no mark on this item to reinforce this guess.
What can you tell me??

It is my recollection that the Portuguese are well know for this type of filigree work. Actually many cultures throughout the world have developed their own variation of silver lacelike work that filagree creates. Early Hispanic goldsmiths here in Southern Arizona were know for their delicate gold filigree jewelry. It is still practiced in many parts of Mexico. India and Turkey also have their variety of this fine work. In Illinois the Dirksen Silver Filigree Co. Produced some faboulous silver spoons with this form of decoration on the handle during the turn of the century. I have two samples of their handiwork in my collection.
My guess is that the spoon illustrated is decorative.

Thank you to Fred for his input...... I would still appreciate any further input anyone else might have. If I can get a manufactures name I will contact them directly.

Mark, I have found a duplicate of your spoon at another website and it is described as a Bonbon Spoon possibly Mexican. Hope this helps.

Thanks to FredZ.Talking about coming through. Fred found this spoon listed on The Souvenir and Commemorative Spoon Museum website. I've already dropped them a line and am on track now. FYI: The spoon is silver, referred to as a Bonbon spoon, and may have been made in Mexico. It is a very high standard of philagree work. Just have to work out 'Mexico' for now....... unless it has been moved to northern Europe lately.
Thanks again FredZ.

This old thread was referenced on another forum - the spoon is from the Philippines, the same form, produced for decades with slight variations, is still sold at the silver shops in Baguio City. One is also shown in Rainwater's Spoons Around the World (1976), page 369, plate 1851.
