Slide #7

"Here is an example of a cape or cloak clasp. Unlike buckles, which were generally made with vertical "struts" on the back through which silk ribbon belts would be threaded or sewn, clasps are made to be sewn directly on to the garment. As a result, they have rings on the reverse to facilitate attachment, or holes drilled directly through the clasp through which thread and needle can pass. Also, the clasp mechanism itself needs to be simple - such as the ring and hook on this piece - so that the cape or cloak can be fastened or unfastened while wearing gloves. This clasp is made by George W. Shiebler, who worked out of Brooklyn in the late nineteenth century and very early twentieth century."
