Slide #38

silde

"Another exciting aspect of collecting is finding the real piece, having only seen a photo in a catalog or book, or finding a photo of a piece that is already owned. Retail jewelry catalogs and product catalogs of manufacturers, help to date buckles and place designs within the context of popular styles and dress accessories. This Paye & Baker buckle is enamel on silver and is identical to the photo in the Paye & Baker Manufacturing Co. Silversmiths catalog of 1908, except that the background is black instead of white. Paye & Baker was a North Attleboro, MA retailer and silver manufacturer. Its sterling mark is shown in the lower right corner of the slide. This is a one piece buckle, and the catalog photo illustrates how it was meant to be worn. The buckle is about 3" high."
