The brooch illustrated here is one of multiple variations I have seen for this form, brooch #1094. It features a series of three decorative rectangular plaques mounted on three horizontally parallel bars. This example depicts a spider, heron, and seahorse. I have seen 2 or 3 other examples of brooch #1094, and no two have had exactly identical motifs, so perhaps the individual worker was permitted to select from a wide variety of designs and construct the brooch to his liking. In all cases, the rectangular plaques have shown different hand-hammering patterns.
