A few weeks ago while at the NYC Flea Markets Richard and Cheryl discovered a large quantity of old silversmiths' production drawings and materials. We promptly went to see for ourselves what the seller had. The seller explained that this was just a small sampling of the "Teapot" drawings/photos and that there was much more flatware and other types of holloware materials at their shop in New Jersey. As we looked through the drawings it became apparent that Hickok Matthews was making silver for Cartier, Theodore B. Starr, J. E. Caldwell, and many others. We realized from the sampling that this was a collection that needed a home.

We called several institutions but most didn't have the resources to consider such an unplanned acquisition. James Kaser, at the New Jersey Historical Society, rose to the occasion and rushed over to the sellers shop to see what, if anything, could be worked out. For the whole lot the seller wanted a very large amount of money. James managed to get the seller's price down to 1/3 of the original price even so it was too much for the private, under funded and not-for-profit New Jersey Historical Society to consider. The New Jersey Historical Society is a "hand to mouth" institution and must first find operational (i.e., electricity and heat) funding every year before they seek acquisition funding. Acquisitions are generally secured via donations and the giver gets the tax deduction.

Somehow James came up with a small amount of funds and purchased a very small part of this collection. The seller has gone back to selling off the shop drawings a piece at a time. James believes that the seller will give the balance of the collection to the New Jersey Historical Society if they can come up with $7,500. If you can help please contact James Kaser at 973-596-8500 ext. 240.

----------------

Hickok Matthews Company began as Matthews Company in 1901 and in circa 1935 merged with Elder-Hickok Company. Elder-Hickok Company's roots go back to 1896 and include mergers and acquisitions that included Lebkeucher & Co. and Howard Sterling Company.
