In the Jensen Forum there is a question about repairing an ivory handle. Maybe Jeff, Fred or one of the other silversmiths will jump in with a recommendation....

This brings to mind another question. What are the rules about ivory? I heard that ivory could be imported but are there rules when it comes to repairing ivory? Can existing ivory be salvaged from an old pot or cheese scoop handle, then refashioned and used for a repair?

I went to a hodgepodge auction a few years back where there was a sad old upright piano on the block. It had been in a house fire and soaked with water to boot, a real wreck. What caught my attention was that three gents bid the thing quite high -- several hundred as I remember. It turned out they were after the ivory keys which where in perfect shape. The winner moved the piece out to the parking lot, stripped out the keyboard, and left the shell behind. Nobody seemed surprised by it all, so I assume it's a normal way of getting a supply of ivory, though I've know idea of the actual legality.
