Perhaps one of our readers could help me with a subject about which I am woefully ignorant -- souvenir spoons. The spoon shown here was recently acquired by a friend. It is in the Waverly pattern (thank you Scott) by Wallace. The bowl image is an accurate rendering of the ranch of a local Southern California celebrity from a century ago, Madame Madjeska. The spoon is inscribed To Viola (her personal secretary, from whose family it was purchased) from M. Madjeska. The pattern was introduced in 1892 and Madame died in 1910, which provides a nice bracket.
  • Does anyone know if this spoon is recorded in references?
  • Can it be traced through Wallace records, if they exist?
  • Did Modjeska commission them privately for gifts? How many were produced and when?
Another spoon was issued (in the late 20s) by her estate, after the ranch had been converted to an inn, but it is quite different in form (the ranch looks more like a stock image) and fairly common here. I have checked with several collectors of Modjeska ephemera and none had any knowledge of this spoon.
