First time here...does anyone know if it is realistic to have a monogram (initials) removed from a sterling tea set?

Thanks

Why would you want to have a monogram removed? I have seen only two that I would even consider removing. One was an off-center combination of three Greek letters designating a sorority, and another had English letters in a vaguely oriental style. I think most monograms are beautiful and generally add to the beauty of a piece of silver.

I would definitely not have monograms removed! Some are works of art. Even the typical ones are nice. I like the Tiffany ones that mimic Japanese calligraphy.

Hi there Ms. Karakelly

First let me state my qualifications.. I have been a silver dealer for 20+ years.

Your question falls into two categories:
possability & desire.......

1st question is...Is the silver thick enough to have the initials removed without going through the metal? Second part has to do with how busy the design is.. Is there a cartouche that the engraving is in? If so
than part of the design work can dissapear with the mono removal.. Makes the set look pretty bad..

2nd question..Does the monogram really offend you that much?.. I usually tell my clients to invent an ancester whose initials match. Now... if the monogram is that of an former spouse, and you are certain you want something done about it, you are best rid of it..

At any rate , any mono removal on anything but a perfectly plain set will be visable, and if the set is an old one it will lower the value by about 40%.

We have found a few sets of braces clips with wonderful elaborate monograms and mounted them on suspenders that Richard regularly wears with his suits. When asked "Whose are the initials?", he always proudly replies "My grandfather's, on my mother's side."
