I was poking around an antique mall the other day when I encountered a box full of items like these; wooden blocks with depressions in them, and wooden mallets of various shapes and sizes. I believe that they are metalsmith's tools. The blocks look just ike those used to sink a flat sheet of metal as the initial step in forming a piece of holloware. This particular block is about 7 1/2 inches square and two inches thick. The mallet is rounded on one end and flattened to a point on the other, and seems ideally suited to shaping metal into the block. Indeed, a partial lable on the mallet handle seems to read "METAL", among other things.

I seem to recall that silver requires metal tools to work; perhaps these are for copper or pewter? Interestingly, this particular block is signed "Wilkinson" in two places. I would love to think this belonged to George Wilkinson, the great Gorham designer, but that is a very remote possibility, especially if these tools are for copper or pewter.

I would very much appreciate any information about these items, especially from someone with metalworking experience. Are you out there, Jeff?

Thanks!

Brent

These tools are used by metalsmiths for sinking a bowl into shape. The silversmith often will use wooden tools so as not to mark the metal. The wooden hammers often have to be refinished because they tend to deform by repeated blows to the harder metal. I use both wooden hammers and stakes (shapes that provide a surface to hammer on). I also use modern day materials such as the plastic delrin. Hope this answers your question.

Thanks a lot, Fred! So these could well be silversmiths tools? I believe I may have to rescue to remaining pieces from obscurity. They are being sold as "wooden molds".

Thanks again!
