Dear Sir,

I read the posting and reply given to "UT Student" about the purification of silver. Hence,I am informed that there are many books out there providing the necessary information.

I know nothing about this area of expertise but what I am curious to find out is this:

  1. Does the purification of sterling sliver involve constant virgil and if so, how long does this usually take?
  2. How does one tell if the silver has been purified to the degree desired?

I will be grateful if you could provide some information on the above questions.

Thanks again,
Sarah

Purified silver or silver of .999 purity can be attained with a variety of refining processes. I believe the most common involves dissolving the alloyed metal in nitric acid and then removing the silver by either plating it from it's suspended state or by dissipating it by the addition of a salt. Refining does require diligence to maintain prevent further contamination and loss of the precious metal. The cost of the chemicals can be high and the risks of injury can not be discounted when using caustic and oxidizing chemicals. I would recommend leaving this process to the professionals and their sophisticated equipment.

I do not know what process is used to test the refined metal. I suppose a Spectral Analyzer could be used but at no small cost. I believe the process assures a relatively pure metal as the result of refining. Hope this helps.
