Hello from Scranton, Pa.

I was trying to find some information on a silver ingot I got at a Flea Mkt. Could not find anything out on Ebay, so I turned to Google, a search engine and came up with this story on Mikkel Mandt. Could it be possible I stumbled on to something very valuable? Below are 2 pictures of the ingot, weighs about 8.5 oz. If you ever do read this and need more pictures I would be happy to take what ever you need. Any help would be Very much appreciated.

Here are some additional photos.

I don't know who Mikkel Mandt is , please tell us more about this silversmith. To me this doesn't look like silver, it looks more like the lead/pot metal counterweights used with motion picture camera cranes and booms.

Anyone have a better idea?

I'm no expert on anything, but it does look like silver to me. On the back, opposite of the name it looks like tarnish. As far as a counterweight isn't 8.5 os. a little light? It only measures 3 3/16"X 15/16" X 15"/16" then it tapers off, not very precise, guess I'm just grabbing at straws. The main reason is the article I found on Google, when I asked for "Mandt silver" Mandt or sliver got me different things. Check out the link below, this Mikkel Mandt was quite a character. If nothing else an amusing story.

Well thanks for your interest, if you find out anything more I'd like to hear about it. Thanks for the input. like I said this guys was a real character. Time period was the early 1700's, and he was a master silversmith, enjoy.

Without knowing anything about this item, I would presume that the mark relates to "M and T". I have no idea who or what "M" or "T" might be. A cursory scan of Rainwater doesn't show any likely candidates. Of course, that line of inquiry follows the suggestion that the item is silver. I suppose that any jeweler can make such a determination.

My recommendation would be to have the ingots tested for metal content. I still would doubt that these ingots would date back to the 18th century. Were they from this period they would no doubt be hallmarked as to metal quality. The MandT mark between the stars appear to be part of the mold. The bottom of the ingots oposite the MandT mark are actually the top of the ingots when they were originally poured. Please keep us informed as to what you discover about the ingots. How many do you have?
