Hi,

I recently purchase this German Silver ring box. it is Marked " Ger. Silver", "Pat. Apr. 8,1902". Can you tell me what this means. Should this give me an idea of a company that made it? how can I find the company that made it. Also, is anyone familiar with the design that is on the top of the box. It looks like plumes with a band holding them and the ribbon or scarf together.

I can't find anything on it. I also wondered why it's not marked with a hallmark or maker?

Thanks,
Ringboxlady

German silver is actually a misnomer--it's neither silver nor German. The metal is an alloy of nickel, copper, and zinc (so it is also called nickel silver somtimes). A lot of pieces of jewelry and other accessories of the time are German Silver. Like your ringbox, they are silverplated German silver. I'm sure your piece is American. The design looks like a rather stylized fleur de lis. I'm not sure if we can trace a company without a trademark.

Thanks Paul for clarifying for me.
It certainly helps.
