I just came from a dealer who has an interesting item he is offering at auction.

They are two disks of sterling made in England for the firm of J. Goddard & Sons.

I was told they were used to test their polishing products. They are impressive to hold and are hand chased. The backside of each is smooth.

Has anyone ever heard of such an item before?
Does anyone recognize the silversmith firm that made these in the 30's?

quote:
2 LARGE SILVER DISCS

Each 6 1/8" in Diameter and 1/4" Thick

These were manufactured in the 1920's and used for evaluating different silver polishes that were being made by J. GODDARD & SONS SILVERSMITHS of ENGLAND.

One weighs: 1255 grams (40.35 Ozs.)

and the other weighs: 1193 grams (38.35 Ozs.)

for a total: SILVER WEIGHT of 78.7 Ounces.

We were told by the seller that these were special ordered by his grandfather's company, J.GODDARD & SONS, and that they are .925 fine silver. They each have the English Hallmarks that confirm this purity.

He acquired them many years ago and told us how they were used. We considered selling them individually but since they've been together for all these years, we decided to offer them here as a pair. Each is boldly Hallmarked.

Lovely pieces, but I doubt they were made for anything like product testing. Aside from the added expense of the decoration, a good testing lab would not re-use stock metal, but have fresh batches of standard size, purity, and weight. Each product would be tested and compared to raw and finished standard pieces, with the test blanks numbered and stored for future reference. I suspect these were some sort of board room/front lobby display pieces.

Scott,

Thanks for making the post so impressive looking. The information of their use was given to the dealer by the heir of Goddard & Sons who sold him the disks. They are impressive. I wonder if Johnson Home Products might not want these for their historical archives.

I would suspect the reason for all the decoration would be to see the effect a product being tested would have on such decorations. This can be a problem with silver polishes. Some are too harsh and erode raised areas. Some leave a residue in low spots that is very difficult to rinse off. Nice pieces.
