Hi,
Perhaps someone here can help me identify the following marks on dinner flatware. Stamped on the inside (hollow) of spoon and fork are , left, within a square, what looks like a flattened M with a D underneath. Right, again in a square, an A with 800 underneath. Unfortunately, I can not manage to post picture of marks, but I can e-mail if any one has any ideas. Pretty floral design, looks as beginning of century. Not bulky. Any help is very much appreciated. Thank you. Lucy

Here's a copy of Lucy's marks... The marks are placed right for French, but I can't ID them so far... Anyone?

Delheid Freres - Brussels, Belgium. The flattened M is really a snake.

Tom,

The placement of the marks led me to agree with the Belgian ID - (similar to French.) I've looked everywhere for info on Delheid Frères. Can I ask if you'd share your reference source. I'm still new at this and struggle still to find the marks and makers.

Merci!

I, too, have been searching for the last four days about those Freres Delheid, and up to now I only found the following text in a sales cataloque from Belgium. The text (page 3)reads as follows

N°20

CAFETIERE

Bruxelles, entre 1831 et 1868
Poinçons: titre 800 et poinçon d'orfèvre D surmonté d'un serpent pour Delheid frères entre 1831 et 1868

Also the same description at Numbers 26 & 27 (page 5).

Those are exactly the marks on the cutlery. But I could find nothing on the history of the Freres Delheid, when / if they stopped manufacturing etc.

Tom & Suzanne, thank you again.

You might look for a copy of Van Belle Epoque Tot Art Nouveau which covers Belgian silver 1868-1914. The book was published by the Provinciaal Museum Sterckshof-Zilvercentrum.

Art Nouveau and Art Deco Silver - by Annalies Krekel-Aalberse...I think...lost my library a couple of years ago and haven't replaced alot of volumes. Perhaps someone else could check the reference for you. Best, Tom

Thank you for the references. Here in S. Africa is not easy to check those books, but I wrote them down and will be looking for them.
Keep well

Krekel-Aalberse has a nominal amount of information about the history of Delheid Frères, but it does document the mark.
