Topic: TREASURE OR TRASH

This little sterling container measures 1-5/8" x 3/4". It is decorated with the Coat of Arms of Peru. The number 30 appears on the insides of both the lid and the bottom. In addition, set forth on the inside bottom, are the teeny figures 925 and 8973. Is it a pill box? Or a ringbox? Or a just something left over from the World's Fair?

Thanks,
Donna Martin

Your little container is certainly Peruvian and rather a souvenir than intended for a specific purpose. I suspect the form had its origins in a silver Peruvian coin of the late 19th. or early 20th century. These were often incorporated into ashtrays, dishes, boxes etc. In your example, the coin has been copied without the original inscription.

It's certainly not a great treasure- but it's not trash either. From your photo, I suspect the hinge has been rather crudely repaired.

I imagine that the use of silver coins dates from after their removal from general circulation - I guess around 1930. However your piece may be much more modern.
