Since I have no replies to my request for help identifying my "mystery" tea service, I must assume that no one recognizes the pieces I described. Can anyone recommend a book that may help? I'm fairly certain that the pieces are German in origin (at least the writing on the bottom is German). They are obviously not solid silver, but silver-plated porcelain. Thanks.

Most good libraries have a few silver reference books, always a good place to start if you live near a decent library.

The technique you seem to have is that of ceramic lustre ware, with the silver like layer achieved by the use of platinum as the pigment. "Lustre pigments were often employed as complete covering. When this was silver derived from platinum the product was often called 'poor man's silver'" (quote from Dictionary of 19thC Antiques, by George Savage). It can be very attractive, sometimes almost folksy, but is easily damaged.
