I know this means the item is 95% sterling silver. Can you please tell me the approximate age of this set, and possibly what country it was originally made in? Patrick Vyvyan Posts: 640 Registered: May 2003	posted 04-02-2004 11:05 AM Technically the Sterling silver standard is 92.5 % pure, so 950 may not necessarily indicate silver content. It might, for example, be a pattern number. Can you post photos of the mark and your set? IP: Logged
Paul Lemieux Posts: 1792 Registered: Apr 2000	posted 04-02-2004 11:17 AM I have seen a lot of 20th century Japanese silver marked "STERLING 950". I think the silver content is actually 950, and the word sterling was used, perhaps, because the pieces were made for export and more customers would be familiar with the word sterling than just a number, 950.
