These photos are of a late 19c sterling sugar bowl lid retailed by Caldwell. Both the foot and underside of the lid have these scratched patterns in them. I'm wondering why as they are not decorative, a silversmith would go to the trouble?

I have seen similar scratch marks, a couple times where somebody really wanted to remove an inscription, and other times it was overzealous polishing with an abrasive. I don't think they are intentional.

Here's a photo of the bottom showing the Caldwell stamp, which is not under the scratches. Maybe they reworked it for some reason?

Is this base cast or forged? Possibly filing was used as part of the finishing process and they did not bother to burnish them out on the underside.

I have seen this done on pieces where a fabric or some other material was to be inserted. The rough surface allows a place to put the cement and gives it the chance to adhere. Candle devices seem particularly prone to such a treatment. Anything that might tip over rather easily could be treated this way to make weighting it easier.

Swarter: there appear to be light hammer marks on the inside of the bowl and lid. The item is a little over 8" high and weighs about 18 standard ounces. The mono has possibly 6 letters and a band with the dates 1871-1896, obviously an anniversary piece. Stylistically, it looks earlier than 1896.
