I collect silver with interesting inscriptions. Sometimes when I buy pieces (especially on ebay) the silver has been dipped and the inscriptions are hard to read. Does anyone know what I can do to blacken the engraving to make it stand out and be more readable?

Taking a close up with a digital camera and
experimenting using Adobe has been successful for me.
A negative image or sharpening can give some clues, so have fun.

I was once advised that if you are having difficulty reading a hallmark, you could light a candle and let the smoke 'darken' the hallmark. Then you could take a piece of clear tape and place it across the surface and lift the soot off of the silver, therefore revealing the hallmark on the tape. I do not see why the candle trick wont work in 'darkening' the inscription on some of the pieces you have purchased that have been dipped. I would be very careful in making sure that you do not apply the flame of the candle to the piece as well as to make sure the metal does not get hot from the flame. You really only want the soot of the candle smoke to attach to the piece. Hope this helps!

Somehow I don't think the above answers are what Iolanthe is looking for. I think she wants to make the pieces permanently more readable.

Iolanthe, why don't you look at this previous thread and see if it offers some ideas that you can use? Restoring blackened oxidation?
