I just acquired a set of goblets that I am trying to clean but there seems to be a really fine see thru tape in small areas dotted about on the surface. I have tried to heat it to remove it, and a silver polish with very limited success, it is going but I'm afraid I might break the stem with the pressure I have to exert just to get a miniscule amount off. Anyone know what this might be and if there is an easier way to go? Thank you!

If it is tape or tape residue, I have found that using window cleaner or 409 works to dissolve it pretty well-obviously clean it off quickly.

The "tape" is probably bits of old saran wrap; I see it fairly often on pieces put in storage in the last 50 years or so. Unfortunately, it is one of the worst materials for silver storage, as it can actually etch the surface. I'm guessing that once it is removed the spots will still look bad. You may need to resort to buffing to make them look better.

A very effective product especially marketed for removal of adhesive (stickers, labels, decals, and tape) and their residues is UN•DU, made by Doumar Products of Dallas, TX. It contains heptane, so use it in a ventilated area and try not to inhale the fumes.
