This is a fairly ordinary 1880s silver napkin ring. However, its inscription caught my eye: "From Dr. to Annie." This intriguing presentation makes one wonder about the circumstances under which the ring was given.

In my family nicknames could be formal, like my grandmother calling her 15 year older sister "Sister" all their lives. My grand father, a doctor was "Doc",
Is this an example of a sort of fomal familiarity?
