I just recently purchased a beautiful ladle at auction and I am a bit confused to what it was used for. It is a typical looking soup ladle that is 12 inches in length. The unusual part of this ladle is that it has a beautifully pierced 'hood' to half of the bowl. There is a opening in the side of the bowl where you could pour liquid out but not the solid part of the soup. The 'hood' acts as a strainer, if that makes sense at all. My question is what is this piece type called and was it used for a specific soup or entree? Any help would be appreciated!

I have seen a few hooded ladles, but mainly for punch. That makes more sense, as one might wish to strain ice out of punch, for example. The size of yours is right for soup, though.

I have a feeling that most of these "hoods", at least on Victorian pieces, were decorative rather than functional. You can find them on nut and cracker scoops as well, though they provide little in the way of utility.

I'd love to see a picture, if possible. I find these hooded items quite attractive!

Maybe the hood is to keep large items, like dumplings or bones, from going into the bowl. I have also seen a few hooded salt ladles. Interesting area. The answer probably lies buried in Victorian cookbooks.
