I have a collection of folding silver fruit knives. I would really like to detail each on with what the marks on the blades mean ...

Is there a single source or publication that will help me figure these all out??

The one book out these on the subject is from the 70's and does not detail the stamps.

Thanks much in advance.

Most appear to be English or early American ...

However, I have been collecting for sometime now and would not be surprised if some were of different origins ... I think I have around 50 at this time

Thanks,
Michael

For the English, you'll need a copy of Jackson's. For the American, a slew of books. Why not take some pictures and post them here?

I will work on some pictures during christmas

I will additionally try to get a copy of the book
I have gone through 2 hours of the past listings ... LOTS are on identifying Hallmark markings ... perhaps a comprehensive guide would answer lots of peoples queries on "what is this mark"

Thanks

Silver Folding Fruit Knives
by Bill Karsten
is the title of a book that covers Mr. Karsten's research. It is out of print and an internet search may find you a copy. I believe I have seen it for under $10.

Thanks much for the idea.

I have that book.

Unfortunately it is from the 70's and only covers what Hallmarks are, not what each one means.

The descriptive in that book on the spline patterns is nice for estimating possible ages of knives.

Thanks again for the input.
I order Jackson's packaged with an American book on Amazon yesturday. I look forward to getting them to adventually be the knife expert redface)

I have a few of the folding fruit knives as well, and have had some luck identifying the makers. Are there any, with the same marks as the others. For instance generally a Lion is indicative of Sterling in most cases, A Monarch's head helps to identify the time range of their respective reign. There are a large number of different marks, but in general from my limited experience the ones with multiple letters indicate the maker.

I have also seen a general trend (not in all cases) that three marks tend to be American, but four or five tend to be from the UK, at least that is the trend of those I have collected.

As stated by other there is no real way for us to help until we see pictures, anything else would be a guess.
