How do I identify sterling silver flatware by patent number. That's just about all I can identify (other than the word sterling) on my various patterns.

I tried the patent office but that was impossible.

There is another way. Find a company that sells replacement pieces and see if their site contains photos of pieces that matches yours. I warn you, though, this will be like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack if you cannot narrow it down more. Even if you cannot read the marks, can you clean the piece and post a photo of the pattern and hallmark? Even if it is only partly legible, some one may be able to figure it out. Good luck,
TM

Sometimes it is faster and easier to post here photos of the front and dback of the pattern and a closeup of any marks.

Truthfully, I don't know if I have ever seen a patent number on a piece of American flatware. More often than not, flatware with a patent mark is marked PAT followed by the year it was patented. For example, Gorham's Chantilly pattern is marked PAT. 1895, since it was patented in 1895.

You may also send a photo to a replacement company. Those places are a very good resource for identification.
