Here is a Whatzit.

Most often they are found in silverplate.

The drawing is from a patent paper.
After a few guesses I'll put up the entire patent.

It is obviously an ostrich egg warmer for the real hungry client.

Hi Scott! Without having the dimensions my guess would be a Victorian egg stand that boils, poaches and/or steams eggs.

From wev's obscure knowledge file:

Mr. Kirkland's father-in-law, Charles Merriam, was co-publisher, with his brother George, of one of my favorite bedside volumes, the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

WEV,

Your insights always surprise me. I tried to find out more (just idle curiosity) about the relationship by doing a quick search of the WEB. ("William Kirkham" "Springfield, Ma*") Not much there. You are truly an amazing resource. I wonder what other gems of info you have squirreled away?

The only "William Kirkham" found were from Utah or the UK. I did find this about a Samuel Kirham. Another loose Kirkham connection to Merriam-Webster?

Shryock, 1828.

Unfortunately, I can add little about Mr. Kirkham beyond his marriage at Springfield on 23 Oct 1861 to Harriet, daughter of Charles and Sophia (Warriner) Merriam.

There are some hints he was born in the area of Wetherfield CT, probably in the late 1830s. He is not listed in the 1880 census, nor is his wife. I don't have access to the 1870 records, but that would be the next step.

Do you know if he made Spoons, as I have a "Kirkham" in my "Unidentified" box?
