There is probably a mores specific place to post this question, but I reckon there may be enough people interested in the answer to justify a posting in "General".

Why do so many Russian cigarette cases have a piece missing which would seem to be the place where the elastic once was?

A case I own illustrates the point:

(Look at the bottom right hand).

I've noticed this on several other Russian cigarette cases. Why?

Rgds,

Tom

The thousands of cigarette cases (you recognize them because all the hallmarks are inside, on enameled cases in the enamel or outside on the rims of both halfs)I have seen, mostly have the hooks for the rubberbands. Sometimes they are broken or removed, because the nonsmoking owner used the case as wallet.

In Russia existed money purses in silver or enemal (often nearly the same size like small cigarette cases). Over the years they lost their internal division made of cloth or leather and are sold to the unknowing as cigarette cases. You recognize them on the hallmarks outside on both halfs and the missing hooks .

If you want to know why there is missing a piece of material on the rim, the explanation is very easy when you take a complete cigarette case. This is where the hook for the rubber band fits in, otherwise you can not close the lid.

Hope that helps
