AHW on another thread says: Most of the dealers I have talked to indicate that cheese scoops are hard to sell and it may be the use of the word scoop is misleading. In use one is not really scooping cheese out as much as turning segments of the cheese to crumble or break it up. Perhaps a new name would help sales.

If the cheese scoop is presented as a 'blue cheese server' it moves readily. This is a function people can look at it and see it doing. They then imagine entertaining with a salad bar, a wedge of blue cheese and this elegant server.

Similarly, the table crumber is spectacularly useless for most modern people. But call it the 'enchilada server' and they are wonderfully useful.

What uses have people here found for older pieces? How do we adapt silver made for a different style of living to ours today.

I've heard of sugar nips and tongs being used for ice cubes.

Hi Dale!

Just a couple of things immediately come to mind ...

I love my Asparagus server for Lasagna, casserole dish, fish server, and any pierced spoon or ladle can double as a sugar, chocolate sprinkler on desserts or for grated cheese.

Have a nice day!

I think that the “right” person using something or displaying something makes a huge different in whether or not others even consider buying the “something”. In the book “The Tipping Point” Malcolm Gladwell traces several items (including hush puppies) that had large sales after what a first glance seems inconsequential actions by a few. This would be a good book to read by those in sales of any type.

From my own experience I know if my wife picks up something in a shop others will become interested in the item and start asking her questions about it. If she puts the item down very often they will buy it so she has really learned not to put things down unless she really does not want it. No one ever seems the least bit interested in what I am looking at so she has some quality that conveys to others that she is looking at something they should be interested in.

On a larger scale I guess this is what Martha Steward does. If one could have her use a cheese scoop as it was originally intended or a crumber as you suggest I suspect sales would go out the roof.

Interesting post. I have recently purchased a silver watch chain (with T bar) for the purpose of attaching my jewellers' loupe when viewing or examining silver. Attached to the lapel of my jacket, the loupe can be dropped down my top pocket when not in use - but the lenght of the chain is perfect for examining items. Rgds to all TBC

I didn't have to look any farther than my desk to answer this one. I use a silverplated cigarette holder from a Reed & Barton smoking set as my pen and pencil holder, and I have a pair of open salts that I use to hold paperclips. I have also used a fish trowel to serve smaller cakes, as it fits the size of the cake piece better than any of my cake or pie servers.

Oh Yes...!

Thanks Dale, for passing on the idea of Tamale server as a use for a crumber. Neat idea. Also when Ms. Martha appears with small spoons dangling from her ears, we all can push our spoon pins to the front case.

Tomato servers can be used to flip hamburgers, and toast racks are widely used to hold letters. Cats and dogs may be fed and watered out of silver dishes, and I use a silver brush to sweep away the dust from my cloth photo background. Good boar bristles work every time.

I use a place card holder,in the kithen, to hold recepies while I cook, and a beaker can be used for pencils or toothbrushes.

Such a neat topic. More.. More!

I once met an owner of ONC silver who admitted that she had purchased some of our Olive spoons, which are intended as serving pieces, not place setting pieces, and used them as sorbe spoons. She admitted it rather sheepishly, as though expecting to be scolded for straying from the terminology.
