Hello all

I am contemplating buying a copy of Ensko. From very brief research it would seem there are two recent versions - the 1989 version and the "definitive" 1948. Any suggestions about which I should get?

TIA

Waylander

Waylander, I have the 1989 edition, and it includes facsimile pages from the four previous Ensko books, as well as all the information from those editions. So definitely the 1989 is the way to go, IMHO. It's a great book!

I have the Definitive 1948 edition with 226 illustrations. I got it because I bought Rainwater on line, this one was on sale and if I bought the two together I got free shipping which meant I basically paid $2 for it. smile I like it a lot.

It has maps in the back of silver shops in major cities, both lists of names and lists of marks and lots of tiny photos in black and white. It is an inexpensive, lightweight book.

If you are planning on buying two books Amazon (can I say that?) has good deals.

"Definitive" is a sales gimmick - Ensko III may have been definitive half a century ago, but it hasn't been for a long, long time. When you are dealing with any book with marks, you should always try to buy the latest revision available if you can. Since the 1948 edition of Ensko is an inexpensive paperback (Dover) it doesn't hurt to have a second copy to keep by the computer for quick reference, as it still has value (which is more than can be said for the American section of Wyler), but you shouldn't rely on it exclusively. Even Ensko IV is 20 years old now, but at least it isn't 58 years old, and it is nearly 200 pages longer, having expanded biographies and other additional information, besides the revised tables of marks.
